It was one of the worst days ever for Apple Inc. (AAPL) shareholders.  Steve Jobs would not be pleased.  Apple's market cap shaved off $22 billion, that's double Netflix's(NFLX) value.  Since Apple's 52-week high of $705 its market cap has lost $283 billion.  Keep in mind Google's (GOOG) market cap is $257 billion.  What else could that lost money have bought?

It was a mixed bag for stocks but we found a sparkle in Apple Inc. (AAPL) and VocalTec (CALL).  Mastery also found a few stocks that are due for a pullback including Linked In (LNKD) and Netflix (NFLX).  We review the first trading week in April 2013 and hail the 7th-dan black belt in Aikido.

What's a Covered Call?

The covered call is a strategy where an investor writes a call option contract (sells an option) while at the same time owning an equivalent number of shares of the underlying stock.If this stock is purchased simultaneously with writing the call contract, the strategy is commonly referred to as a buy-write.

While you may have heard that trading options is risky business, covered calls are actually a very conservative strategy, and most brokerages even allow retirement IRA accounts to write covered calls.
