Motorola (MOT) adds Flair with the CLIQ

Remember back in the day when the Motorola RAZR sold 50 million units and Motorola shares were trading in the $20 range?

Since then, hello MOTO has lost it's "Flair". It seems that they are doing just the minimum, like Jennifer Aniston in Office Space:

Stan, Chotchkie's Manager (Mike Judge): "We need to talk about your flair."
Joanna (Jennifer Aniston): "Really? I-I have 15 pieces on. I also--"
Stan, Chotchkie's Manager: "Well, 15 is the minimum, okay?"
Joanna: "Oh, okay."
Stan, Chotchkie's Manager: "Now, you know, it's up to you whether or not you want to do the bare minimum or, uh-- Well, like Brian, for example, has 37 pieces of flair on today. And a terrific smile."
Joanna: "Okay, so you want me to wear more?"
Stan, Chotchkie's Manager: "Look, Joanna--"
Joanna: "Yeah?"
Stan, Chotchkie's Manager: "People can get a cheeseburger anywhere, okay?"
"They come to Chotchkie's for the atmosphere and the attitude. Okay? That's what the flair's about. It's about fun."
Joanna:"Yeah. Okay, so more then, yeah?"
Stan, Chotchkie's Manager:  "Look, we want you to express yourself. Okay? Now, if you feel that the bare minumum is enough, then okay. But some people choose to wear more and we encourage that. Okay? You do wanna express yourself, don't you?"
Joanna:": "Y-Yeah."
Stan, Chotchkie's Manager: "Okay, great, great. That's all I ask."
Joanna:": "Okay."

In spite of their lackluster performance and dismal phone sales over the last couple of years, Motorola still has some tricks up its sleeves, and there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

Enter, the Motorola CLIQ.

The Cliq will be available from T-Mobile later this fall, just in time for the holidays, but pricing was not revealed during its introduction. T-Mobile will offer the phone in two colors: titanium or winter white, and it will be sold worldwide in 2010 as the Motorola Dext.

Motorola hopes its Motoblur user interface will help differentiate it from the rest of the pack. Motoblur syncs information from different sources, such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and your personal and work e-mail accounts, and automatically streams updates to your home screen. The idea behind it is that this constant stream of information will mean you have to spend less time opening and closing applications.

Will Motorola sell as many CLIQ's as it did the RAZR? Probably not, as the CLIQ is going to cost more than the RAZR. However, if they do, they can tell the rest of the smartphone makers to take their Flair and shove it.
